Beethoven: The Late Works

with Professor Gil Harel, (CUNY Baruch College)
Ludwig van Beethoven is often described as a composer whose work straddles two musical periods: the classical, and the romantic. But what exactly does that mean, and indeed, can one hear the difference between these styles? During this program, Professor Gil Harel (CUNY Baruch College) will examine three works by the composer: the Missa Solemnis, the op. 131 string quartet, and the final piano sonata (op. 111). Using a broad analytical style, he will show how these works anticipate a new era in music history, and cement the legacy of the man who created them.
