In this alt history set in the 1980s, Charlie makes a meager living by trading stocks from home, and dreams of love with his beautiful neighbor, Miranda. When he comes into a small inheritance, he squanders all of it on the newest android model, aptly named Adam. Just as Charlie embarks on a romantic relationship with Miranda, his relationship with Adam grows increasingly complex, as do the dynamics between Miranda and Adam, leading to an interesting love triangle. McEwan raises provocative questions about the blurry line between human and machine sentience.
