FSU Partnership 2026 - Literacy Unlimited Students share their stories

In spring of 2026, Literacy Unlimited partnered with a community-engaged education class from Framingham State University to offer a program called Conversational English Practice. For an hour each week, intermediate to advanced adult English learners worked with FSU students in small groups to practice English through discussions about idioms, music, holidays, and storytelling. When asked what their favorite part of the program was, one English learner shared, “I met wonderful people, and every conversation left me with something valuable to think about.” At the end of the semester, the students spent several weeks brainstorming and practicing personal stories they wanted to share. With their permission, weare sharing some of those student stories here.

Kodjo - Literacy Unlimited student, 2025

In May 2025, Kodjo earned his Associates Degree in Biotechnology from Mass Bay Community College. As he walked across the stage at graduation, Literacy Unlimited Office Manager Karen Boudreau and Kodjo’s English tutor Lauren, cheered him on from the audience. Literacy Unlimited has been a critical community in Kodjo’s life over the last four years, and he wanted to celebrate this academic milestone with the people who encouraged and supported him along the way. First matched in 2021, Lauren and Kodjo have worked diligently together over the last four years, and Kodjo’s English level has steadily improved as a result. In spring 2023, the Literacy Unlimited staff nominated Kodjo for an academic scholarship from the Massachusetts Coalition for Adult Education. Kodjo was selected as a recipient, and he enrolled at Mass Bay the following semester, ready to tackle a Biotechnology degree in his non-native language of English. Kodjo has met that challenge with grace and grit, and he’s not done yet. Kodjo is continuing his studies in Biotechnology, with the goal of getting a Bachelor’s Degree in the field. We have no doubt that Kodjo can accomplish any goal he sets his mind too, and we can’t wait to see what he does next!

Merve - Volunteer Speaker, Literacy Unlimited Potluck, December 2024

Volunteering here has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It’s not just about literacy—it’s about the resilience and strength of the human spirit. Every learner I work with reminds me how transformative education can be. And in helping others grow, I’ve grown too." - Merve
