Resolutions, goal setting, and habits

Are you someone who likes setting new goals at the start of each new year? Many of us have good intentions when it comes to making changes, but we don't all have the tools needed to do so. No matter the goal, experts agree that the key to achieving one begins with good habits.

Why habits?

Habits serve as building blocks. A habit is a repeatable behavior like brushing your teeth. Because you do it regularly, you probably don't think about it. Much of our day is made up of habits. If the first thing you do after getting out of bed in the morning is to make your bed, then it's a habit. A habit may be a permanent part of our daily routines.

A goal, on the other hand, is temporary. Once (if) we achieve a goal, we're ready to move on to another one. While a goal may not become a permanent part of our lives, habits can become part of our usual routines. But how do you form new habits?

In the past few years, a number of books have been written to help you form good habits and break bad ones. Here are just a few to check out.
