Main Library Book Group: The Night Watchman, Louise Erdrich thumbnail Photo

Main Library Book Group: The Night Watchman, Louise Erdrich

Louise Erdrich pays poignant homage to her grandfather in this sweeping novel about Native American dispossession in the 1950s. Like her grandfather, our titular hero is a humble night watchman, also the tribal chairman of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa in North Dakota. Initially an uneventful post, Thomas Wazhashk’s life is upended when he learns that the U.S. government has earmarked them for “emancipation”...The Night Watchman follows Thomas’s tireless efforts to persuade the U.S. government to honor treaties that protected what remained of their already picked-over lands. And Erdrich further expounds on the scourge of systemic racism, sexual exploitation, and other unsavory sundries through the stories of his extended family, and those in their orbit. Sci-Fi Book Group: Mars, by Ben Bova (In Memoriam)

On touchdown, he makes a political mistake that sets off a chain reaction among the leaders and politicians on Earth. Tea & Talk Tuesdays: The Surprising Science of Alpha Males, TED Talk by Frans de Waal thumbnail Photo

Tea & Talk Tuesdays: The Surprising Science of Alpha Males, TED Talk by Frans de Waal

Based on extensive research on chimpanzees, biologist and primatologist Frans de Waal draws fascinating parallels between alpha males in human and chimpanzee societies. De Waal’s often humorous observations shatter some commonly held myths about alpha males and compel you to examine the qualities that constitute effective leadership. Let’s discuss how this talk confirmed or upended your prior beliefs about alpha males and then consider these concepts in the context of leadership in today’s tumultuous world. Before you join us for the discussion, we invite you to watch the TED Talk HERE.
