Tea & Talk: The Pandemic Stress Hack That Just Might Keep You Going thumbnail Photo

Tea & Talk: The Pandemic Stress Hack That Just Might Keep You Going

After two years of unpredictable, ongoing, and intense stress related to COVID-19, and for the majority of adults in the United States lifetimes full of it before the pandemic, it is doubtful that our baseline state is as relaxed as it should be. The perpetual ringing of the stress alarm may have resulted in a sensitized stress response system; our own grasp on stress may have shifted. What felt tolerable before may completely set us off now. How could we fix it? Could we activate our stress response to allow it to deactivate and return to baseline? What if we introduce manageable challenges in order to complete them? Before joining the discussion, read the article https://forge.medium.com/the-pandemic-stress-hack-that-just-might-keep-you-going-27f21b2330ca.

Lifelong Learning Lecture: “Walking: Keeping Company with Literature’s Most Obsessive Pedestrians” thumbnail Photo

Lifelong Learning Lecture: “Walking: Keeping Company with Literature’s Most Obsessive Pedestrians”

Writing and walking have always shared an association. Wordsworth clocked over 175,000 miles of walking with his sister and his friend Coleridge, climbing in the Alps, as well as in more pastoral Grasmere. This lecture will follow a number of authors and their fictional characters on their excursions. Wordsworth on his rambles, many of which resulted in poems, most famously, his surprise encounter with a whole line of daffodils which he later recalled in the inward eye of solitude; Dickens, who thought nothing of tramping 30 miles into the country, even after long night walks in London, making metaphoric use of the activity in several of his novels. Finally, the lecture will examine other literary walkers, real ones like Thoreau and Virginia Woolf, and in several novels, exploring the relationship between walking and literary composition.
