Lifelong Learning Lecture: Nazca Lines-Decolonizing Interpretation of Very Large Geoglyphs in Peru thumbnail Photo

Lifelong Learning Lecture: Nazca Lines-Decolonizing Interpretation of Very Large Geoglyphs in Peru

Presented by Dr. Yumi Park Huntington, Associate Professor of Art History, Framingham State University

The Nazca Lines, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1994, are a group of large geoglyphs engraved on the ground between 500 BCE and 500 CE. They were rediscovered in the early twentieth century. Many approaches to understanding these Nazca Lines have been developed from relatively Eurocentric perspectives. Today, art historians seek to decolonize the study of ancient American arts. This lecture provides an overview of the most current research on the Lines and gives an appreciation for Nazca culture, ritual ceremony, and material creations.

Please email framinghamlibraryevents@gmail.com to join our Winter-Spring 2021 mailing list and receive Zoom links to lectures. All requests must be received by 5:00 pm on the day of the lecture.

NOTE: If you registered for the Fall 2020 series, you do not need to re-register.

Brown Bag Learning Series: Heart of Glass: How Melting Became My Passion thumbnail Photo

Brown Bag Learning Series: Heart of Glass: How Melting Became My Passion

Presented by Liliana Glenn

We think of glass as hard, brittle, and static. In flame, glass becomes liquid, dynamic, and interactive. Natick artist Liliana Glenn continually finds herself drawn to flameworking—the process of melting glass rods in a torch flame—and deeper into the intricate relationship between molten glass and gravity. Her passion, curiosity and perseverance have kept her on a lifelong journey of self-discovery and artistic expression in glass. Join us as Liliana demonstrates glass as a process and as a product, in beads, vessels, jewelry, and mixed-media sculpture.

About Liliana Glenn:

A designer, maker, and teacher, Liliana Glenn developed a passion for glass more than 20 years ago. “Glass is a wonderful prism [through which to see] the natural beauty that surrounds me,” says Liliana, “I’m drawn to color and its inevitable encounter with light.” She creates and teaches glass in her Natick studio.

Science Fiction Book Club: Borne, by Jeff VanderMeer

In a ruined, nameless city of the future, Rachel makes her living as a scavenger. She finds a creature she names Borne, probably made by the Company, who wants to know if it is a person. But nothing is quite the way it seems: not the past, not the present, not the future. What Rachel finds hidden deep within the Company will change everything and everyone. There, lost and forgotten things have lingered and grown. What they have grown into is mighty indeed.

Book Discussion: “The Binding” by Bridget Collins thumbnail Photo

Book Discussion: “The Binding” by Bridget Collins

It's a world in which people visit book binders to rid themselves of painful or treacherous memories. Once their stories have been told and are bound between the pages of a book, the slate is wiped clean and their memories lose the power to hurt or haunt them. Emmett Farmer is sent to the workshop of one such binder to live and work as her apprentice. He is forbidden to enter the locked room where books are stored, so he spends many months marbling end pages, tooling leather book covers, and gilding edges.

Led by Jillian Holmberg. June 15th and 17th title is "The Star-Crossed Sisters of Tuscany" by Lori Nelson Spielman.

Register for the Zoom Link at: http://bit.ly/FPL-Events. Borrow the eBook on Overdrive/Libby, ebook or audiobook on Hoopla, request a copy through the Minuteman Catalog, or request one of the copies held at McAuliffe.

Tea and Talk Tuesdays: How Electroshock Therapy Changed Me

In acknowledgment of May as Mental Health Awareness Month, we have selected a TED Talk on the topic of depression, delivered with great eloquence and candor by the renowned surgeon and author Sherwin Nuland. Nuland discusses the development of electroshock therapy as a cure for severe, life-threatening depression -- including his own. It's a moving and heartfelt talk about relief, redemption and second chances.

Before you join us for the discussion, we invite you to watch the Ted Talk HERE.

To register and receive an invitation to the Zoom session, please go to http://bit.ly/FPL-Events by 9am on May 25.
