Brown Bag Learning Series: A Tour of Fashion History thumbnail Photo

Brown Bag Learning Series: A Tour of Fashion History

Take a virtual walk through time to see how people have expressed themselves through the cultural language of fashion—from the earliest known “fashion magazines” to the dawn of haute couture. Learn fun facts such as why the bustle, popular in the late 1800s, was thought of as liberating and the way in which designers have collaborated with artists and muses. You’ll learn what fashion can reveal about the times and the fascinating stories of the people living through them.

Main Library Book Group: Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell thumbnail Photo

Main Library Book Group: Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell

England, 1580: The Black Death creeps across the land, an ever-present threat, infecting the healthy, the sick, the old and the young alike. The end of days is near, but life always goes on. A young Latin tutor—penniless and bullied by a violent father—falls in love with an extraordinary, eccentric young woman. Agnes is a wild creature who walks her family’s land with a falcon on her glove and is known throughout the countryside for her unusual gifts as a healer, understanding plants and potions better than she does people. Once she settles with her husband on Henley Street in Stratford-upon-Avon, she becomes a fiercely protective mother and a steadfast, centrifugal force in the life of her young husband, whose career on the London stage is just taking off when his beloved young son succumbs to sudden fever.

Ruth Winett will lead the discussion. Please register at http://bit.ly/FPL-Events by 9am on October 5 for the Zoom link.

2nd Tuesday Adult Book Club: Home Before Dark by Riley Sager thumbnail Photo

2nd Tuesday Adult Book Club: Home Before Dark by Riley Sager

What was it like? Living in that house. Maggie Holt is used to such questions. Twenty-five years ago, she and her parents, Ewan and Jess, moved into Baneberry Hall, a rambling Victorian estate in the Vermont woods. They spent three weeks there before fleeing in the dead of night, an ordeal Ewan later recounted in a nonfiction book called House of Horrors. Today, Maggie is a restorer of old homes and too young to remember any of the events mentioned in her father’s book. But she also doesn’t believe a word of it. When Maggie inherits Baneberry Hall after her father’s death, she returns to renovate the place to prepare it for sale. But her homecoming is anything but warm. As Maggie experiences strange occurrences straight out of her father’s book, she starts to believe that what he wrote was more fact than fiction.

Morning Book Group: The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a "haunting"; Theodora, the lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers—and soon it will choose one of them to make its own.

As Covid ebbs, we wonder which changes we’ve made to our lives will stand the test of time. One of them is our relationship with time. But what is time?
